It’s becoming increasingly easy to avoid toxins thanks to the ever-growing market of natural living products, and home fragrance is no exception. Learn how to diffuse essential oils to avoid toxic holiday candles this season (and enjoy a festive Christmas essential oil blend!).
By the way, this post is sponsored by Plant Therapy, my favorite essential oil company. All opinions are my own.
I’m a sucker for candles. I always have been. I remember once when we were having some friends over, I lit every one of my mother’s candles as I helped to prepare the house for company. Our pastor joked that our family must have converted to Catholicism because of the abundance of candles.
When I got older and set up a home of my own, I continued on with my childhood obsession of yummy-smelling candles. After all, I wanted my house to smell good when people came over, and even when I got home at the end of a long day. A nice smelling home is a welcoming home.
Fast forward ten years and I’ve banned all artificial fragrances from my home because I’ve learned the truth about how harmful they are. Conventional candles have been linked to:
- asthma
- cancer
- headaches
- behavioral disorders
- damage to internal organs
- & more.
Because most candles are made from paraffin wax, a petroleum waste product, they emit known carcinogens benzene and toluene when burned. In fact, candles are a large source of indoor air pollution, and it’s not just due to the petroleum. Candles can also emit lead into the air, which can lead to a host of health problems.
Candles are fast becoming one of the most common unrecognized causes of poor indoor air quality.
-Diane Walsh Astry, Executive Director of the Health House Project, an American Lung Association education project in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Of course these chemicals and heavy metals are a huge concern, but they aren’t the only problems with candles. The majority of candles are scented with synthetic fragrances, which have been linked to a plethora of health problems of their own, including endocrine disruption, as well as the above health concerns like cancer and organ damage and toxicity.
(And by the way, those plug-ins and wax melts aren’t any better. They also discharge harmful chemicals into the air of your home.)
Thankfully, I’ve learned how to diffuse essential oils so that my house still smells lovely, and, bonus, we even get therapeutic benefits by diffusing essential oils into the air of our home.
How to diffuse essential oils so your home smells lovely this holiday season
You do not have to resort to toxic candles to make your house smell like holiday cheer (and let’s be honest, the scents of the season are just as important as any aspect of your holiday decorations!). Instead, diffuse a Christmas essential oil blend!
Because essential oils are made by distilling pure plant matter, you don’t have to worry about filling your home with synthetic fragrances (of course, it’s important to be sure you’re using oils from a reputable company- more on that below).
There are a number of ways to diffuse essential oils, including medicinally in a nebulizer and using diffuser jewelry, but for the purposes of making your house smell nice and festive, you’ll want to use an ultrasonic diffuser like this.

A note on why I chose to work with Plant Therapy
To be honest, I was turned off of using essential oils for a long time. I felt that there was too much misinformation about how to safely and properly use them. I also felt that they were outrageously priced. I knew quality mattered, but I couldn’t bring myself to pay MLM prices for essential oils.
That’s why I’ve been so thrilled to find Plant Therapy, a company that offers high-quality, therapeutic essential oils, for a fraction of the cost of MLM products.
Plant Therapy has really done their due diligence, starting with the origin of the plants used for their oils, and ending with ensuring that their oils have been third-party tested for safety.
They were also one of the first companies to pay special attention to a children’s line of essential oils to ensure that parents can get the benefits of essential oils with their kids while staying safe. Check out their line of Kidsafe Essential Oils here.
In addition, Plant Therapy has a large selection of organic essential oils, which I really appreciate! Shop organic essential oils here.
Plant Therapy is the no-fuss solution to high quality essential oils. They offer fast, free shipping, and you don’t have to meet any minimums to place an order. They also make a wonderful gift for just about anyone on your Christmas list. Click the image below to check out Plant Therapy’s holiday gift guide.

Girrrrrrrlllll!!! I have been preaching this for years. Oils have to be third party tested. Since YL grows their own they some how bypass the system with that’. My friend in Cali who makes high end natural and organic spa-medics also goes with mountainrose for bulk items. Way to go on finding something that works and is cost efficient! I was also thankful to have your ebook for holiday eating this year again as well! ???
