It’s usually pretty easy to whip out some herbal remedy, natural supplement, or random concoction when dealing with sinus infections, stomach bugs and headaches.
However, I’ve you’ve battled serious, persisten stomach symptoms, you may find yourself scratching your head.
If the typical stomach flu remedies don’t seem to be working, you could be dealing with an H pylori infection. Thankfully, we can show you how to treat H pylori at home with a simple treatment that, for many, proves to be immediately effective at stopping symptoms.
You may even be able to avoid antibiotic treatment, the usual conventional H pylori treatment.
What is H pylori?
H pylori stands for Helicobacter pylori and is a type of spiral-shaped bacteria that affects the digestive tract. It’s common to contract H pylori during childhood and to not develop symptoms until much later, or ever at all, though it’s estimated to affect around 60% of the world’s adults.
H pylori may be responsible for the majority of ulcers.
H pylori can be diagnosed with a variety of tests, including a breath test and a stool test, though if you have symptoms, using the simple and inexpensive remedy found below is worth trying before resorting to expensive tests.
What are the first symptoms of H pylori?
The symptoms of an H pylori infection are a number of common digestive complaints:
- bloating
- excessive burping
- heartburn
- nausea
- change in appetite
- unexplained weight loss
One hallmark symptom of H pylori is burning in the stomach when it is empty. A more serious or prolonged H pylori infection may lead to diarrhea or constipation, fatigue and low energy, bad breath, and even mental illness like depression or anxiety.
How long can you live with H pylori?
H pylori may last for years without causing symptoms, though the longer one lives with the infection, the more damage it may do to the gut lining. Learning how to treat H pylori naturally will help to ease symptoms and prevent long-term health problems resulting from an acute infection.
Is H pylori infection curable?
H pylori, like many modern infections, has adapted to its environment, and thrives within the gut. Rather than aiming to completely eradicate the bacteria, one should take the approach of creating a stomach environment that is hospitable to good, healthy bacteria so that the H pylori cannot thrive, and instead gets crowded out.
What kills H pylori naturally?
While the conventional treatment for H pylori is a combination of antibiotics (which doesn’t have a perfect success rate, as the bacteria can become antibiotic resistant, leading to worsening symptoms and recurring infections), learning how to treat H pylori naturally may lead to long-lasting results that won’t have unwanted side effects.
There is a protocol that can clear up an H pylori infection and stop symptoms quickly so that you can go back to enjoying life free of constant stomach discomfort:
A combination of raw manuka honey and black seed oil. Yep, a simple, inexpensive treatment may improve your symptoms overnight!
Here’s the protocol:
1 tsp per day raw New Zealand manuka honey
1 tsp per day black seed oil
That’s it. Treatment should last for a minimum of two weeks, until symptoms have cleared. Stomach discomfort may return if a dose is missed.
Manuka honey deets
All manuka honeys are not created equally. There are a few things you want to look for, including potency. Potency is rated by UMF- unique manuka factor.
The UMF will reveal how potent the antibacterial properties of a manuka honey are, which is determined by the amount of hydrogen peroxide, methylglyoxal, and dihydoxyacetone found in the honey. It’s important to choose a honey that is at least UMF 10.
The manuka our family uses and reserves for more serious conditions (like recovering from a tonsillectomy or acute infections like H pylori) uses a cute play on the UMF label by dubbing their honey UFF 1000- Ultimate FREZZOR Factor.
Frezzor boasts UFF 1000 because they not only have developed a very potent honey with antibacterial properties, they have added a few additional ingredients to increase efficacy, including herbal extracts and minerals for better absorption.
It’s also important to look for a manuka honey that is third party tested for glyphosate and other pesticide/GMO residues, which Frezzor is. You can buy Frezzor Pure New Zealand Manuka Honey here. Keep in mind that a small jar lasts a very, very long time, as it’s to be used as a potent medicine rather than food.
Black seed oil FYI
Black seed oil can be beneficial for a variety of illnesses. It’s made from the seeds of the black cumin plant (Nigella sativa). It is especially beneficial for treating H pylori because it’s been shown to be effective against drug-resistant bacteria.
In addition, black seed oil may be beneficial for liver health, treatment of cancer, and even diabetes.
There are lots of options out there, but look for a pure black seed oil. Choosing a pure liquid makes it easier to take larger daily amounts vs trying to take a tsp worth of capsules. You can get a good, affordable one here.
How to treat H pylori: other considerations
In addition the above treatment, one should keep in mind the health of their gut to make it a more hospitable environment for good microbes. Diet and other supplementation to support gut health and digestion are important.
What can I eat with H pylori?
A GAPS-style diet can be helpful for those suffering from an H pylori infection. Due to the high content of meat stock and broth and probiotic foods, the GAPS diet (particularly the intro portion of the diet) helps to heal the gut quickly, making it difficult for infections like H pylori and parasites to live.
This book and this book can help as you prepare to tackle the GAPS intro diet (and if you suffer from H pylori, you should strongly consider it!).
As a general rule, if you are suffering from symptoms of H pylori, avoid:
- sugar
- gluten
- dairy that has not been cultured
- starchy foods (including most store bought gluten free breads and foods)
Daily, incorporate these foods into your diet:
- fermented foods like sauerkraut and kimchi
- kefir, if dairy is tolerated, or look for one made with an alternative milk like coconut
- meat stock (not to be confused with bone broth- read the difference here)
- nourishing fats like ghee, tallow, and coconut oil (which is also antibacterial)
Other supplements to consider
In addition to learning how to treat H pylori with honey and black seed oil and changing your diet, you may want to incorporate some supplements that support digestive health.
Probiotics- we like these because they are gentle, allergen-free, and effective. Plus, one tiny bottle lasts for months and months for multiple people! Probiotics help to repopulate your gut with good microbes so that undesirable ones die out.
Digestive enzymes- if an H Pylori infection is impairing your digestion, especially if you’re experiencing indigestion and heartburn, you may need to try digestive enzymes. Those with ulcers should not take enzymes with HCL. These enzymes will help to break down sugars, fats, proteins, and carbohydrates.
Hello there, my name is Renee and I too have thyroid issues. I just had a hashimotos flare and it’s very very bad. My mos worrisome concern is my stomach pain and loose bowel movements. So bad that I can’t hardly eat anything anymore it just makes me feel bad. I’m guessing I have h pylori. Will the recommendation you make on the Manuka honey and black seed oil harm me, if I don’t truly have h pylori. My Dr is testing me in 2 days but I’m in so much pain I don’t want to wait for the results. I belch a lot, have digestive issues and am constantly clearing my throat. My Dr’s guess was h pylori bit until I take the tests he won’t know for sure. Just wondering what you think. I love your article very informative.
Hi Renee. Personally, I would start the regimen now and wait to do any expensive testing to see if the treatment works. For my family member, the results were literally overnight.
Hi Jaclyn,
Thanks for writing such a nice article.
Do I need to mix Manuka honey and black seed oil and take it at the same time or take these two separately one after the other or at different times of the day? What is the recommended time of the day to take this? Empty stomach or before going to bed or after breakfast lunch?
Thank you so much.
Kris
You can take them separately. First thing in the morning or before bed are good times to aim for. I think either one would be fine, but I do try to take therapeutic supplements on an empty stomach.
Hi Jaclyn! I’m suffering from h pylori and the antibiotics only make me feel worse. I was wondering if your family member ever got retested after this treatment? And did they ever get any of those symptoms again?
Nope, symptoms just went away. 🙂
What about a young child with the infection? Can this remedy be used as well? Thank you
I would give it to my children for sure.
I am eager to try the honey and black seed oil to see if it helps with my discomfort. I am wondering if it’s safe to do if I have not been “officially” diagnosed with H Pylori as the cause of my gastritis symptoms (i’ve Had it once before and did the antibiotic regimen which is not fun)? And also do you just take a teaspoon of each of them on their own? Or is this something you have to mix into tea or something else? Thank you!
I don’t see why it would be a problem to try it. We just do a tsp of each, straight, but you could mix them with something if you wanted.
Thank you so very much for the information. I’m on a very limited disability income and was literally panicking about how expensive this can be. You have given me hope that I can afford to heal. I was diagnosed with H-Pylori, diabetes and diverticulosis. I truly believe that they are all intertwined. I’m going to give this a try and pray that it helps. Again, thank you so much.
Hi Jaclyn,
Firstly, thank you for sharing with the rest of us. We tend to feel so hopeless when we discover that we are not well and that the only way to get better is by ingesting what i consider to be harmful drugs, that cure one thing but may cause another. I speak from experience. I was diagnosed with H. Pylori about a year ago. The 1st treatment with Prevpac did not eradicate it so my doctor put me on Pylera. I detest this treatment (pardon my french) and have failed at ever completing the course. I have made 3 attempts, all of which have landed me in the ER. I am almost certain that I may have had h pylori since I was a child and the thought of potentially passing it on to my children makes me so upset. i am helpless…hopeless, well until I came across your post this past Sunday. I went to Whole Foods yesterday and got the honey and seed oil, had my first dose this morning. It was bearable. I am hopeful but worried that my poor diet may counter the positive effects of this therapy. I am a serious coffee drinker, my water intake is laughable. Being a single mom has turned my life upside down and my health has declined as a result. Could you provide recommendations for what i should avoid eating or doing while on the treatment? Is there a risk of getting ill or feeling sick. I am a little worried about the oil. Thank you so much for your generosity in sharing this. God bless.
Hi,
I’ve had stomach issues the last month that are mild but annoying. Such as bloating, increased flatulence, loss of appetite here and there, and increased burping. I’ve never had any stomach issues but it seems like my symptoms point to either H. Pylori or SIBO. I’m going to go ahead and try the above treatment, but wanted to ask if it is SIBO instead will this treatment work as well? And do you recommend taking mastic gum as well? Thank you.
I’m not familiar with mastic gum, but if you have symptoms of H Pylori, it may be worth trying this protocol.
Hello Jaclyn,
The link that you provided stated that the study was done on ppl who took both Manuka Honey & Black seed oil 3x a day after meals for 2 weeks. In your case, you gave your children 1 teaspoon of each per day for 2 weeks. Which one should I follow?
Let me know. Thank you.
Hi James. Everyone is different. Their needs and condition will be different, so you’ll just have to figure out what works for you. In our case, once or twice daily was enough.
How many of the pills if the black seed oil do I take to equal a tap?
Hi Brittany. I don’t know what pills you have or how much each one contains; I’m sorry.
Hello, would you mind sharing what brand of black seed oil you use or provide a link for that too? I would really appreciate it 🙂
Hi Jessica. It is linked up in the post. Under “black seed oil FYI” at the end of the third paragraph, the kind I use is linked up to the word “here.”
Hi Jaclyn. Is that Honey sold anywhere as well as the black seed oil
Hi Mari. Both products I recommend are linked up in the post. 🙂
Hi Jaclyn,
I have been suffering from h pylori for about a year now. I went on antibiotics in November and it didn’t help to remove the bacteria. I’m trying a homeopathy treatment at the moment and it’s also not helping. Did you children also have constipation and unable to fully defecate as symptoms? I was diagnosed with h pylori but I also believe I have something else or maybe those are the symptoms of h pylori as well. Please get back to me as soon as you can!
Thank you!
Constipation was not a symptom we dealt with.
Hi
The link you have given for Manuka Honey is not working. A page opens with product catalogue. For “Manuka Honey” if i click on “Click for details”, it shows error message.
Please check
Thank you. The link has been updated.
Was this “family member” a child? I’m a nurse and I’m pretty sure my 6 yr old has H Pylori. I’m doing my research to be sure but your suggested treatment seems logical. Would you recommend the same amount regardless of age? I’m new to MKU honey. Thx
I always start low and slow on dosage with my kids, so I probably would start with smaller dosages for a six year old.
Hello, I just want to thank you for this blog post, I have had the worst stomach issues for at least 4 years and no one seems to understand me when i complain. I feel less crazy after reading the comments here. I will definitely try your recipe.
Do you know if this honey is any good? https://www.amazon.com/Wedderspoon-Premium-Unpasteurized-Multi-Functional-Superfood/dp/B014AP5JUG/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1551112751&sr=8-1-fkmr0&keywords=MANUKA%2BHONEY%2BUFF1000&th=1
I have never used it; sorry. The only manuka I use it linked up in the post.

I’m so glad to hear you’re feeling better!
Hi there! Did you find that this healed your son of h. pylori completely? I ask because I’m trying to learn more for myself. I recently read an article from university health news that read “vitamin c, vitamin e and selenium supplementation will help lower your risk of dying from stomach or esophageal cancer after H. Pylori infection has been treated” this made me a little nervous, since Im trying to go the natural route, and don’t know enough about h.pylori. I would love to know if you followed up with lab testing for him after you tried this?
Hi how long did your member take the Manuka and black seed and was it before meals or how many times a day?
For about a week, a couple times a day on an empty stomach.
Hi Jaclyn
Thanks por this article! Do you think that it woukd hurt to do the antibiotics and the honey and oil at the same time?
I think that’s just a personal preference. It certainly won’t hurt to add the natural treatments along with the antibiotics.
Hi Jaclyn,
Hello from the Virgin Islands. I am desperate for relief. H Pylori has made my life so miserable. I am sick all the time. I tried conventional antibiotic treatment and had so many side effects . I have ordered the Manuka honey and black seed oil and pray that they will help me. A million thanks for sharing.
Hope you feel better soon!
I am beyond grateful to find this article. I was recently diagnosed with H. Pylori but only after another antibiotic wiped out my entire stomach. Antibiotics are not an option for me right now and I’m in so much pain. I just ordered and wondering if I can expedite shipping. I can’t wait to find some relief. I’m a mom of 3 and I hate seeing my kids worry about their mom. Thank you again.
I hope it helps and you feel better soon!
Thanks for the information on the treatment of HP
