MCT Oil Uses: Improved Brain Function, Fat Loss, & More

You’ll find MCT oil in several recipes here on the blog, but are you familiar with other MCT oil uses? In this post sponsored by Perfect Supplements, I’ll share below all about how and why to use MCT oil, and how to find a good one you can trust.

MCT Oil Uses: Improved Brain Function, Fat Loss, & More | The Family That Heals Together

What is MCT oil and what does it do?

I remember the first time I tried MCT oil. I was at a dinner party and the host had used it in a recipe. I internally rolled my eyes. “Don’t people know it’s healthier to eat whole foods rather than latching on to these fads?”

I went on about my business, and when I remade similar recipes at home, I replaced the MCT oil with other ingredients. Thankfully, my ignorance didn’t last forever!

It turns out that although MCT oil is indeed a derivative of coconut oil, it really is whole food nutrition- and outstanding nutrition at that!

""

What is MCT oil?

MCT stands for medium chain triglycerides or medium chain fatty acids. It’s a type of fat usually derived from coconut oil, but it’s also found in palm oil, butter, and grassfed beef.

The reason separating these medium chain fats from the rest of the coconut oil makes for such a superior food is because it isolates the very best benefits of coconut oil. While coconut oil is a wonderful, inexpensive source of good fats, it’s largely made up of lauric acid (which is also a beneficial component, but simply doesn’t do for your body what true MCTs can do).

While there are lots of fatty acids in coconut oil, there are only a handful of MCTs:

  • Caproic acid (C6)
  • Caprylic Acid (C8)
  • Capric Acid (C10)
  • Lauric Acid (C12)

It’s actually debatable whether lauric acid is a true MCT, because it doesn’t behave in the body the way the other MCTs do. The other MCTs (caproic acid, caprylic acid, and capric acid) are rapidly absorbed in your body, having essentially bypassed the digestive tract and gone straight to the bloodstream.

What does MCT oil do?

Because MCTs are readily absorbed by the liver and go quickly into the bloodstream, they are able to be converted quickly into ketones, a desired source of energy for the brain. (This is why so many of us swear by “bulletproof” coffee first thing in the morning: it wakes up your brain!)

Most of us are used to feeding our brains glucose for energy. Our modern diet lends plenty of starches, sugars, and carbs to make sure of it. However, new research is showing that ketones may be the brain’s preferred source of energy.

What are ketones? Ketones are produced when you don’t have enough insulin in your body to turn sugar (or glucose) into energy. Your body then turns to fat instead.

Your liver turns this fat into ketones and sends them into your bloodstream, where your muscles and other tissues can use them for fuel.

Because we fast overnight as we sleep (that’s why the first meal of the day is called break-fast), we wake up with low blood sugar, and many of us wake up in ketosis. Our bodies are primed for using ketones as fuel.

However, the average American loads up on sugary, starchy foods like cereal and oatmeal, thereby going back to glucose for energy.

When we instead turn to good fats like MCT oil to start our day off, we keep feeding our brain ketones, which helps it to function more efficiently.

How ketones benefit the brain

When your brain is able to start using ketones for fuel instead of glucose, a few things happen.

  1. GABA (a calming, inhibitory neurotransmitter) is increased in the brain, while aspartate (an excitatory neurotransmitter which can be neurotoxic) is decreased.
  2. Production of ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate), the main source of energy for most cellular processes, becomes more efficient.
  3. The brain is able to use this energy more efficiently with less toxic waste that is likely to result in brain inflammation.

This more efficient energy usage can be beneficial for those with a variety of conditions that involve brain inflammation, including:

  • epilepsy/seizures
  • bipolar disorder and depression
  • migraines
  • dementia
  • & ALS

Most notably, ketogenic diets and MCT oil have been studied for the effects on seizure disorders, and have been found to inhibit seizure activity.

The benefits of ketones for weightloss

When our bodies start producing ketones due to lack of glucose to use for energy, they are producing them from fat. As you may have already figured out, this fat can come from two places: our diet or our bodies.

This is good news if you’re trying to lose weight, as your body can begin to used stored fat as energy. Cutting out carbs and sugars from your diet and increasing good fats will assist your body in using fat as energy.

This is one reason incorporating MCT oil into your daily diet can be so helpful.

Is MCT oil good for you?

MCT oil uses expand beyond losing weight or fueling the brain.

In addition MCT oil may:

  • increase your overall energy
  • keep you healthier by combating viruses and bacteria
  • improve cardiovascular health
  • & lower bad cholesterol.

How do you take MCT oil? MCT oil uses you can try everyday.

It’s so easy to get MCT oil into your daily routine! The obvious way to use MCT oil is to add it to foods and drinks you’re already eating and drinking. MCT oil is totally tasteless and colorless, so you won’t even know it’s there (which is especially helpful if you’re trying to get it into kiddos).

There’s the ever-popular “Bulletproof Coffee.” Mr. Incredible drinks this every single day and swears by it for waking up his brain and getting him going in the mornings. I prefer drinking a bulletproof latte.

Whether you’re drinking coffee or tea, simply add up to a tablespoon of MCT oil, along with other goodies like ghee or butter and collagen to make your morning cuppa “bulletproof.”

Make keto ice cream. This delicious recipe is definitely one of the tastiest ways to use MCT oil!

Add it to salads. Instead of dressing, drizzle MCT oil over your salad, along with a squeeze of lemon juice or a splash of apple cider vinegar.

Blend it into smoothies or shakes. Regardless of what you’re putting in a smoothie, you can add MCT oil without affecting the texture or flavor. I often make smoothies for myself and my kids with coconut milk, frozen fruit, a scoop or two of collagen, and a generous squirt of MCT oil. It’s delicious, filling, and packed full of nutrition.

Make popsicles. A favorite of my children, making popsicles at home allows you to not only avoid the junkie ingredients in store bought products, but also to customize flavors and sneak in extra nutrition. Try my healthy popsicles featuring extra fat and protein here.

Make fat bombs. Read about how and why you should here.

How do you choose a good MCT oil?

You know I do my research and try a variety of products before settling on something my family will use long-term, so the Mister and I have tried our fair share of MCT oils. Some were ok. Some were overpriced. Some caused major stomach upset. And none of them were organic (always at the top of my wish list for any product).

When Perfect Supplements reached out to let me know they were coming out with an all-new MCT oil, I was super excited.

Other products that I had used from the company had exceeded my expectations because Perfect Supplements:

  • sources organic ingredients where they can
  • third-party tests their products for contaminants like heavy metals and pesticides
  • & offers high-quality products for lower prices than competitors.

How Perfect MCT Oil is different

While many MCT oils on the market are made from lauric acid (which does not bypass the digestive tract or get converted quickly to ketones), Perfect MCT Oil is made only from c8 and c10 fatty acids (caprylic and capric). And while c6 (caproic acid) also converts to energy well, it can cause some stomach upset and may taste bad.

That’s why Perfect Supplements was picky when it came to creating an MCT oil: they wanted to offer something superior to what was available (otherwise why bother?). And the truth is, they delivered!

Perfect Supplements’ MCT oil:

  • is made from 100% organic sustainable coconuts
  • is USDA certified organic
  • contains 100% MCTs (C8 and C10)
  • is vegan, gluten-free, soy-free and non-GMO
  • is batch tested (one of my favorite things about Perfect Supplements and their commitment to safe, quality products!)
  • uses low heat processing; no chemical extraction
  • is more affordable than lesser-quality MCT products

I’ve been so happy with Perfect MCT oil and use it every single day, whether for coffee, or smoothies, or in ice cream. And I really do notice a difference when I include it in my morning routine: I have better energy, am more clear-headed, and feel happier.

If you’re ready to give it a try, you can get Perfect MCT Oil here.

And as if their prices aren’t already affordable, they offer multi-item discounts and free shipping for orders over $99. If you buy 3-5 Perfect Supplements brand products, you’ll save 25% on your order, and if you order 6 or more, you’ll save 30%! Trust me, that adds up to huge savings.

Some of my favorites include Perfect Bovine Gelatin, Perfect Hydrolyzed Collagen, Perfect Desiccated Liver Capsules, Perfect Acai Revive, and Perfect Rhodiola Rosea (read about how much I love Perfect Rhodiola here!). You can see all of their quality supplements here.

Keto Ice Cream – Easy to Prepare Recipe (Bulletproof Ice Cream)

If you haven’t yet tried fat bombs, you’re missing out on a simple treat that has huge health benefits. It’s only fitting that I created a keto ice cream recipe (aka bulletproof ice cream) to take fat bomb treats to the next level! Find that recipe below.

Keto Ice Cream Recipe (Bulletproof Ice Cream) | The Family That Heals Together

By the way, this post is sponsored by Perfect Supplements as they’ve recently launched a fantastic new product- Organic MCT Oil! I’m so excited to share about why I love their MCT oil and how I use it in this keto ice cream recipe.

To be honest, when I first heard about MCT oil, I was like “nuh uh.” I’m all about whole foods, and MCT oil is a component of coconut oil. Can’t you just eat whole food coconut oil and get the same benefits? The answer is no and I’ll tell you why.

Why MCT oil is really that special

MCT stands for medium chain triglycerides or medium chain fatty acids. It’s a type of fat usually derived from coconut oil, but it’s also found in palm oil, butter, and grassfed beef.

The reason separating these medium chain fats from the rest of the coconut oil makes for such a superior food is because it isolates the very best benefits of coconut oil.

Because MCTs are readily absorbed by the liver and go quickly into the bloodstream, they are able to be converted quickly into ketones, a desired source of energy for the brain. (This is why so many of us swear by “bulletproof” coffee first thing in the morning: it wakes up your brain, but if you’re looking for something a little sweeter or more kid-friendly, my bulletproof ice cream recipe will do the trick!)

If you’re familiar with the keto diet, you know it promotes tons of health benefits, including:

  • weight loss
  • better brain performance
  • recovery from autoimmune conditions
  • reduced pain
  • & so much more!

If you’re not familiar with a keto diet, it’s a way of eating that is mostly fat, with moderate protein and very little carbohydrate intake. When you eat plenty of good fats and limit carbs, your body begins using fat as a fuel source instead of sugars, and for many people, this means better body and brain performance. But you can still enjoy treats like this keto ice cream recipe!

Keto Ice Cream Recipe

Prep Time5 minutes mins
Total Time25 minutes mins
Course: Dessert
Servings: 4 servings
Author: Jaclyn

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup ghee
  • 1/4 cup Perfect MCT Oil
  • 1/4 cup coconut oil
  • 1/4 cup full fat coconut milk
  • 2 eggs + 3 egg yolks
  • 5 Tbsp. sweetener of choice*
  • 1 tsp vanilla

Instructions

  • Blend all the ingredients together in a high-powered blender, making sure all the fat gets emulsified and is not clumpy.
  • Freeze in an ice cream maker, following manufacturers instructions.
  • Serve small portions, about 1/4 cup ea. This recipe should serve 4-6 people (it's enough for our family of six to each have a small treat).

Notes

*My preferred source of sweetener is raw honey. I'm able to stay in ketosis and still enjoy small amounts of raw honey, and in this recipe, you should only get a few grams of carbs in a serving using raw honey. However, if you prefer a more keto-friendly sweetener like erythritol, you may use that as well.
If your body is not used to high fat intake, you may consider taking digestive enzymes to help break down the fat in this ice cream.

Soothing Salve Recipe: The Simple Herbal Remedy for Bites, Stings, Scrapes, Cuts, and More

Soothing Salve Recipe: The Simple Herbal Remedy for Bites, Stings, Scrapes, Cuts, and More | The Family That Heals Together

The more and more I learn about herbs, the more in love with them I fall! Herbs have revolutionized how I take care of my family. I’ve told you about how to make herbal extracts, and today contributor Heather will show us how to use a simple soothing salve recipe to address a number of skin conditions for your family. Be sure to scroll to the bottom for a special offer, only through Monday, September 26th! -Jaclyn

As herbal medicines are becoming  more mainstream, many are eschewing conventional lotions and creams and making their own soothing salves. Below, I’ll give you a simple soothing salve recipe that can help you replace creams for eczema, poison ivy, diaper rash and so much more.

First, let’s define the difference between a salve, a balm, and an ointment. Many think those words are interchangeable, and that can be true in some cases. However, there IS a difference between them.

Salves are made with a mixture of fats and herbs in a semi-solid state. Generally, they consist of herbal infused oils and wax. They are the ones most often used by the home herbalist. They are quick and easy to make, and you can use wild foraged herbs from your backyard or garden.

Balms are similar to salves. They start with herbal infused oils and beeswax. Then, essential oils are added, making it very aromatic. They tend to be thick and very creamy, and most often in a solid state. If you make lip products, deodorants, or lotion bars, you are essentially making balms.

Ointments are similar to balms. They start with herbal infused oils, and add wax and essential oils to the finished products. However, the main difference is texture. They are usually thinner and not as creamy as balms.

General soothing salve recipe

To make a healing salve, start with a basic recipe of:

  • 1/2 cup carrier oil: coconut, olive, jojoba, or almond are great choices.
  • 3-4 grams dried herbs of choice
  • 3 teaspoons beeswax pellets
  1. Infuse the oil by pouring it over the herbs in an oven safe bowl.
  2. Place in a 200 degree oven for 2 hours, then allow to cool.
  3. Drain the herbs using a cheesecloth, squeezing out as much of the oil as you can from the plant matter.
  4. Add the beeswax to the oil and reheat gently to allow the wax and oil to melt together.
  5. Place melted oils in an airtight container with a lid and write the ingredients on the jar. If you wish to make this into a balm at this time, add 20-25 drops of essential oils.
  6. To use, simply rub a quarter-sized amount on the affected area 2-4 times a day, allowing it to absorb into the skin.
  7. Store in a cool, dry place for up to 2 months. Discard after 2 months or if you see signs of mold in the product.

Herbs to add

Lavender: calming, relaxing, and even muscle pain.

Chamomile and Calendula: healing skin wounds, acne or diaper rash. (Caution: those with ragweed allergy should NOT use Chamomile as they are in the same family.)

Lemon Balm: relieves painful inflammation, hemorrhoids, and varicose veins.

Comfrey: a rapid cell healer; great for any bug bites or stings. The only caveat is that you should NOT use comfrey on broken skin, such as a scrape.

Yarrow: used most often to help stop bleeding, and to promote skin regeneration. This is what you would use on a scraped knee or elbow. Yarrow is in our sports bags for every sport my kids are in.

Essential oils to consider

Lavender: calming and relaxing as well as soothing irritated skin.

Rosemary: uplifting, energizing, and useful for soothing headaches.

Tea Tree: used for anti-microbial benefits such as healing acne or on skin wounds.

Peppermint: used for soothing headaches, stomach pains, and bug bites.

Gentle, baby-friendly salve recipe

To make a skin soothing salve that will go from diaper bag to sports bag with ease, follow the basic salve recipe above, using 3 grams dried calendula and 2 grams dried lavender in 1/2 cup jojoba oil. This will be safe for anyone to use up to 3x a day, with great skin-soothing benefits.

What Are Fat Bombs? The Yummy, Healing Treat You Should Be Eating!

What Are Fat Bombs? The Yummy, Healing Treat You Should Be Eating! | The Family That Heals Together

I think we are all over the notion now that eating fat makes you fat. Right? Mmmkay. So, since that’s out of the way, let me tell you more about why you should be eating fat, lots of it, and how fat bombs can help you do that.

What are fat bombs?

I’m not even sure who started the “fat bomb” craze, but fat bombs are one of my favorite health trends in a while!

Obviously, fat bombs contain fat. They also contain a sweetener of some kind.

Seriously, like, sign me up!

Why are fat bombs good for you?

Not only do our bodies need fat (and lots of it) for basic functioning, but during times of crisis, fat can be exceptionally healing.

Personally, fat bombs were a huge part of my recover from adrenal fatigue earlier this year.

While fat is very nourishing to all systems of the body, helping to heal the gut, power the brain (the brain is, after, comprised mostly of fat and needs plenty of fat to function well), and lubricate joints, when paired with an easily-digested sugar, it has remarkable effects on the blood sugar.

A constant blood sugar roller coaster can contribute to adrenal fatigue, as the adrenals are responsible for helping to regulate blood sugar levels. When the blood sugar becomes unsteady, the adrenals become overworked, and, eventually, begin to give out. In return, blood sugar becomes even more unstable. When I was experiencing severe adrenal fatigue, I would wake up in the mornings starving, and and would be extremely irritable until I ate some breakfast.

I would get spacey and forget things and my heart would race. I felt totally out of control and hated knowing how cranky I was with my family. I knew I had to figure out how to fix whatever was wrong with me.

What is adrenal fatigue?

As I mentioned, adrenal fatigue occurs when the adrenal glands become too taxed to perform their duties. Lack of proper sleep, poor diet, or too-rapid detoxification can cause adrenal fatigue. Mine came on suddenly and I later realized it occurred when I began taking a very strong probiotic, which was extremely effective, but too strong for me to have taken in full doses. (I now take only 1/3-1/2 capsule at a time.)

For months, I suffered from:

  • hair loss
  • extreme fatigue
  • insomnia
  • irritability
  • and a confused circadian rythm (I was tired during the day, but would get a burst of energy and want to clean house at 10 o clock at night!)

I relied on a number of therapies to heal my adrenal fatigue, and once I really tackled it, it went away fairly quickly!

I’ve written about using sole water as part of my adrenal-healing protocol, but fat bombs were a huge help as well!

When talking about healing the adrenals, Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride (author of Gut and Psychology Syndrome) says, “I recommend making a mixture of raw butter or coconut oil with some raw honey: get the butter (or coconut oil) soft at room temperature and mix a little honey according to your taste. Put this mixture into a glass jar and carry that jar with you everywhere. Eat 1-2 teaspoons every 15-20 minutes all day long. This mixture will maintain your blood sugar at a normal level and help your adrenals recover.” (source)

The trick is, the honey helps to raise the blood sugar, but the fat acts as an anchor and doesn’t allow it to raise too high or too quickly.

I did, in fact, carry around a jar of fat bombs with me, and it was only mildly embarrassing. 😉

How to make fat bombs

Here’s the awesome part: making fat bombs is so easy!

You’ll need some softened fat (my personal favorite is brown butter ghee, which has the most amazing caramel flavor, but you can also use coconut oil, butter, ghee, or even nut butter).

Now add some raw honey (a good rule of thumb is to start with a 4/1 ratio of fat to honey). Give it a taste and add more honey if need be, up to equal parts. I generally like about 1/2 cup ghee or butter with 1/4 cup raw honey.

Adding some real salt to the mixture imparts both a nice flavor, as well as the mineral-boosting benefits of good salt (as I discuss in my post on sole water).

If you want a specific recipe, my coconut melt candies are delightful, and your kids will definitely love them too!

When I’m in a hurry and feel my blood sugar threatening to tank, I grab a spoon, stick it in my honey jar, scoop up some honey, then stick that same spoon in a block of grassfed butter and scoop some of that onto the spoon, too, and eat a big ol’ spoonful of fat bomb. And you can bet if my kids are around, they gather around like baby birds and beg for a bite too. (Don’t worry, I don’t regurgitate it for them.)

Did you know fat bombs could be so beneficial? Share using a link below so your friends can enjoy the craze too!

How to Make Coconut Butter

How to Make Coconut Butter | The Family That Heals Together

Coconut butter.  It’s quite the confusing ingredient for folks, myself included not so long ago.  I kind of thought maybe it was basically the same thing as coconut oil… or somehow associated with actual butter.  But coconut butter is neither of those things.  If you think of nut butter and how it’s made from grinding nuts until they are a “butter” consistency, that’s exactly what coconut butter is, but with coconut.  Coconut butter actually contains both the meat and the oil of the coconut, so by blending the two smoothly together, you get a butter.  And it’s ridiculously easy to make.  And ridiculously expensive to buy (though if you really want to buy it, you can!  I did for a long time until I had the equipment and know-how to make it myself).

So, here’s how to make coconut butter:

You need shredded coconut and a high-powered blender (I use a Vitamix).  That’s all.  I’ve even used flaked coconut in a pinch, though I think you have better luck with shredded.

Pouring 1-2 cups of the shredded coconut at a time into the blender, turn the blender on high and use a tamper tool to push the coconut down into the blades, continuing to push and scrape it until it is all blended smoothly.  It will become thick and fairly difficult to continue pushing down.  This is why it’s important to have a high-powered blender, because a cheaper one will not be able to turn the coconut into a butter consistency and you will likely burn up the motor trying to do so.

Once it has all blended into a thick, paste-like butter, you’re done!  That’s it!

Coconut butter, with its slightly sweet and salty taste, is yummy on its own, as a fruit topping, in smoothies or ice cream, or as a base for breads and cakes.  It’s very versatile and nutrient-packed with coconut goodness!

For a super special treat, mix it with a little raw honey and a handful of chocolate chips.  It’s like eating cookie dough!

Now that you know how to make coconut butter, do you think you’ll make it rather than buy it?
