I recently wrote about vaccination contraindications and the six types of people who should not be vaccinated. The post has been very popular and I’ve been thrilled to see the information being shared. One question has come up several times since, however, that I want to address, and that’s about the connection between vaccines and autoimmune disease.
People want to know: DO vaccines cause autoimmune disease?
Just from listening to the stories of my friends, without doing any research, I’m inclined to say yes, vaccinations absolutely do cause autoimmune disease. After all, I’ve had three personal friends who were diagnosed with type 1 diabetes following vaccination. I’m inclined to think that’s no coincidence.
But what does the science say?
Vaccines and autoimmune disease: connection or coincidence?
To understand if it’s possible for vaccines to cause autoimmune disease, we first have to understand how vaccines work.
- vaccines contain a dead or weakened pathogen (a germ- bacteria, virus, etc).
- your body is introduced to this pathogen via the vaccine, and an “imitation” sickness follows.
- because the germ is weakened or dead, this imitation sickness provokes your immune system without any outward symptoms of illness.
- as your body begins to fight the pathogen, your immune cells, called lymphocytes, create antibodies to the invader.
- later, when you are exposed to the same sickness, your body will have already produced antibodies to the disease, making you immune to becoming sick from it.
That’s how vaccines work in a perfect world. It’s how they were designed to work. But we don’t live in a perfect world, and vaccinations don’t work just as they were designed for all children, because vaccinations were created to be used on healthy children.
We don’t live in a perfect world
“Let us have a look at what is happening to children in our modern society. If you look around, how many healthy children do you see? Childhood asthma, eczema, diabetes, allergies, hay fever, digestive disorders, ADHD and autistic spectrum disorders have all gained epidemic proportions! The majority of siblings of autistic children have eczema, asthma or another one of those disorders. And though all these health problems appear to be different, they have one thing in common- a compromised immune system. A compromised immune system is not going to react to environmental insults in the normal way! Vaccination is a huge insult to the immune system.
“The manufacturers of vaccines produce them for children with normal immune system which will react to these vaccines in a predictable way. However, in our modern society, with our modern way of life, we are rapidly moving to a situation where a growing proportion of children do not have a normal immune system and will not produce an expected reaction to the vaccine.
“In some of these children, vaccination, putting an enormous strain on an already compromised immune system, becomes that ‘last straw which breaks the camel’s back’ and brings in the beginning of autism, asthma, eczema, diabetes, etc.” – Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride, Gut and Psychology Syndrome
I know we don’t want to think of our children as unhealthy. I work really hard to feed my family nourishing foods and keep their immune systems functioning well. But all my hard work can’t undo the years of damage caused by poor food choices, pharmaceutical use, the poor gut health I passed on to them, or, most of all, the toxic world we live in that, frankly, we can’t do anything about.
So if this is true, if vaccines and autoimmune disease are connected, due to the malfunctioning immune systems of our children and society as a whole, how are they connected? How do vaccines actually cause autoimmune disease?
Vaccines and autoimmune disease: there is a connection
Vaccines cause autoimmune disease in a number of ways, including:
Immune system dysfunction
Because we understand that vaccines were designed to illicit an immune response, it is not a stretch to imagine that the immune response could be a negative one. Indeed, vaccinations can cause the immune system to dysfunction.
T-lymphocytes can become confused and attack the body. The immune system can incite those t-cells to overreact, and begin overproducing antibodies, including those that can attack your own tissue.
When the body is overloaded with antigens following vaccination, instead of having the expected response of creating antibodies, those T-cells become overstimulated and, instead, create autoantibodies. The T-cells are then transformed into cytotoxic T lymphocytes, which, after maturation, cause injury to tissue.
One study concluded “Systemic autoimmunity appears to be the inevitable consequence of over-stimulating the host’s immune ‘system’ by repeated immunization with antigens…” (source)
Another study found that young women developed primary ovary failure following the HPV vaccine. Specific auto-antibodies were found, showing that the young women’s bodies were attacking their ovaries and thyroid. (source)
ASIA (autoimmune syndrome induced by adjuvants)
Adjuvants are the compounds added to vaccinations to increase their efficacy, by provoking a greater immune response. The term ASIA was coined to describe autoimmune syndromes caused by adjuvants, and, as such, is “an umbrella of clinical conditions including post-vaccination adverse reactions.” (source)
One study found that “vaccines are able to elicit the immune system towards an autoimmune reaction…
“Since vaccines are given to previously healthy hosts, who may have never developed the disease had they not been immunized, adverse events should be carefully assessed and evaluated even if they represent a limited number of occurrences. In this review of the literature, there is evidence of vaccine-induced autoimmunity and adjuvant-induced autoimmunity in both experimental models as well as human patients… These mechanisms are shared by different conditions triggered by adjuvants leading to the autoimmune/inflammatory syndrome induced by adjuvants (ASIA syndrome).” (source)
Another study links aluminum-based adjuvants in particular to adverse events related to vaccine adjuvants. (source)
One report implicates the aluminum in vaccinations as a cause of neurodegenerative disease like multiple sclerosis and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. (source)
Authors of these studies conclude that adjuvants are clearly to blame for some autoimmune reactions, and that the need for more studies is urgent. One author stated, “…efforts to unveil the connection between the triggering of the immune system by adjuvants and the development of autoimmune conditions should be undertaken. Vaccinomics is a field that may bring to light novel, customized, personalized treatment approaches in the future.” (source)
In other words, as I wrote about in “vaccination contraindications: six people who should not be vaccinated,” vaccination is not a one-size-fits-all medical procedure, and more studies need to be done, as well as testing of individuals prior to vaccination, in order for medicine to be responsibly practiced in the future.
Antigens actually infect organs
Let’s go back to how vaccines work: they introduce a very small amount of dead or weakened antigen to the body so that the body can easily fight it and create antibodies without actually becoming outwardly sick.
But what happens when the immune system is not strong enough to fight off even these “innocent” antigens? The antigens can, instead, settle into tissues, infecting organs and creating disease.
A report from the National Vaccine Information Center details how the viruses rubella and mumps infect pancreatic islet cells, leading to type 1 diabetes.
The report states, “Doctors started making reports in the medical literature as early as 1949 that some children injected with pertussis (whooping cough) vaccine (now part of the DPT or DTaP shot) were having trouble maintaining normal glucose levels in their blood. Lab research has confirmed that pertussis vaccine can cause diabetes in mice.
As diabetes research progressed in the 1960’s, 70’s and 80’s, there were observations that viral infections may be a co-factor in causing diabetes.” (source)
A study done by J Barthelow Classen, president of Classen Immunotherapies and former researcher at the National Institutes of Health, found a causal relationship between type 1 diabetes and the Hib (Haemophilus influenzae type b) vaccine, with those receiving the Hib being more likely to develop diabetes than those who did not receive the shot, and diabetes was more likely to develope with increased dosages of the Hib vaccine. The study concluded, “The rise in diabetes, just one potential adverse effect, exceeds the benefit of the vaccine…” (source)
It has also been reported that children with autism (which many believe is, in fact, autoimmune in nature) have been found to have a measles infection in their gut. I personally know of a little boy for whom this was the case, and who improved greatly after treating the measles infection.
While you will mostly find medical literature to the contrary, there are studies pointing to the connection between measles virus infection in the gut and autism, also known as pervasive developmental disorder. One study found that “a failed cellular immune response to measles vaccine is a potential cause of autoimmunity.” (source) This takes us back to understanding that when a weakened immune system does not properly fight off an antigen, in this case measles, the antigen can then settle into the body’s tissues, in this case, the gut.
Every body is different
As the quote from Campbell-McBride reveals, today’s children may not be “healthy” enough for vaccinations. Due to immune system weakness and environmental factors, we simply cannot predict how each individual will respond to vaccinations, and every body is different.
If we do not begin to take seriously the concerns raised by researchers in recent years, the incidence of autoimmune disease, already on the rise in children, may become worse.
Do you have a child who was diagnosed with an autoimmune condition following vaccination?

Hi Claire,
I’m now 30, lichen sclerosis is such an awful condition and so painful. I’m sorry that happened to you. I 100% believe mine is caused by the Tdap.

Great article!! Thank you for writing it and for all the information. I wanted to add in your comments all the notes I have saved about vaccines and autoimmune disease…
THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN VACCINATION AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF AUTOIMMUNE DISEASES
“Another example of confirmed autoimmune adverse effects after vaccination is idiopathic thrombocytopenia
, which might arise after administration of the measles-mumps-rubella vaccine. The reported frequency of clinically apparent idiopathic thrombocytopenia after this vaccine is around one in 30,000 vaccinated children”
http://www.researchgate.net/publication/268352524_The_relationship_between_vaccination_and_the_development_of_autoimmune_diseases
Two autoimmune diseases are on the vaccine injury table, and another autoimmune disease Guillian Barre Syndrome is the most frequent vaccine injury
Vaccine Injury Table-
V. Vaccines containing measles virus (e.g., MMR, MR, M) A. Thrombocytopenic purpura
IV. Vaccines containing rubella virus (e.g., MMR, MR, R)
A. Chronic arthritis
A case in Vaccine Court, where it was ruled, the HPV vaccine did cause the patient to Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA)
11-549 • RAMSAY et al v. SECRETARY OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES
Filed 01/08/2016
PUBLIC ORDER/RULING (Originally filed: 12/18/2015) regarding Ruling on Entitlement. Signed by Special Master Lisa Hamilton-Fieldman.
Public Order/Ruling – Causation; Gardasil Vaccine; Human Papillomavirus (“HPV”) Vaccine; Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (“JIA”).
Autoimmune diseases associated with vaccine injury
“Multiple sclerosis (MS) is the most common demyelinating disease of the central nervous system. In this disorder, your immune system attacks the myelin sheath or the cells that produce and maintain it.
Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP) is the most common chronic neuropathy caused by an abnormal immune response. CIDP occurs when the immune system attacks the myelin cover of the nerves.
Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) is a rare autoimmune disease marked by a sudden, widespread attack of inflammation in the brain and spinal cord.
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease in which the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissue
Vaccine-related thrombocytopenia is considered to be of immune origin because antibodies can be detected on platelets in about 79% of cases, which is why it is included among the secondary immune thrombocytopenias (ITPs) in the subgroup of drug-induced ITPs.
Transverse Myelitis is sudden onset inflammation of the spinal cord. It is a autoimmune disorder triggered by vaccination”

I was given a tetanus booster 20 years ago at the GYN office and ended up in the emergency room . The doctors were dumfounded by my extreme reaction they claimed they hadn’t seen a case like mine since they stopped using horse hair in the ingredients. They said my immune system attacked the tetanus and almost killed me to get rid of it. Now I have fibromialgia and undiagnosed other problems that I’m fighting for answers. I wonder if it was from this tetanus shot 20 years ago?
Jaclyn says
I’m sorry, Renea. That’s terrible! It could definitely be related.

My son died at 19mo after being diagnosed at 7mo as the 1st infant with a rare chromosomAL traslocation of 8p11 a myleproliferative eosinoPhilip neoplasm preleukemia. He became sick after his 8 weeks immunization and symptoms progressively got worse those next 5 months before diagnosis of his blood disorder with a prognosis of deat if he didn’t have chemo and a bine marrow transplany. His symptoms progressed 7mo to 1 year now age so Avery he was on life support for his chemo and organs were support suportoeverely damaged before chemo that after his bine marrow transplant after his 1st birthday he had graft-vs-host so bad his body still could not repair that 7mo later after 2 months of ECMO his body succumbed to total organ failure. We could use any additional resources linking vaccination to blood mutations, if you could help, I would be beyond humbled. For those whoncan use his story for further study as Our son baffled doctors and he had a medical journal written about him titled: Pediatric 8p11 Eosinophilic Myleproliferative Syndrome (EMS) , on Wiley Pediatric Blood &Cancer.

I had allergic reaction to childhood vaccines and wasn’t immunized further. I had massive allergies and got sick frequently. Allergic reaction to DTP, then the final blow; Flu vaccine made me very sick and triggered Lupus. My son reacted to DTP and is autistic. He just participated iui n an ASU study recieving new gut bacteria aka microbiome. I firmly believe that some people can’t tolerate vaccines.
Katy says
Im researching on this topic. In December I got the yellow fever Jab and since then I got so sick I ended at the hospital with Hashimoto thyroiditis diagnosis and depression. Now I started to have muscle pain and cramps. I was a sport fit woman before that vaccine and now I’m falling down i must visit a reumatologist to see if I’m developing arthritis but of course no doctor will say is for the vaccination
Jaclyn says
I’m so sorry Katy! I hope you get answers and that you’re able to begin detoxing from the vaccination.

My 14 year old daughter received the Gardasil vaccine July 21, 2016. The second week of August she began feeling dizzy and a few days later she started with a headache. Her symptoms progressively have gotten worse including fatigue, brain fog, double vision, chest pain, tachycardia, tremors. She has woke up with headache and gone to bed with a headache every day since the end of August. Her initial diagnosis was autonomic dysfunction and migraines, as time and symptoms have developed she has been on a number of different medications and even hospitalized trying to break the pain cycle of her headache all have been unsuccessful. She did a tilt table test with an inital heart rate of 67 lying down, once tilted up her heart rate was 118. She drinks approximately 3L of fluid a day, and her sodium intake is 6-7 gms a day to help with her dysautonomia but has found no significant relief. She was a very strong active athlete prior to this but between the headache, dizziness, double vision, tachycardia, and chest pains she finds it very difficult to play. Her 8th grade year has been miserable, she is getting so discouraged. I have read info on the correlation of POTS and the gardasil vaccine. Has anyone had any type of treatment with positive results post gardasil reaction?

Staci , I’m in the same boat as your daughter. It’s so sad how our stories go hand in hand . On top of what your daughter goes through my daughter goes anaphylactic on a wkly basis on top of the headaces and some months she has horrible nerve pain where she has to walk with the assistance of a cane. She missed most of 8th grade because she was so sick and then started 9th grade this year but again we have spent more time in the hospital then she has at school .

I was unvaccinated as a child but when I decided I wanted to be in the medical field at 20 years old I had to vaccinate in order to do clinicals. I don’t know what vaccine ignited my autoimmune disease but after getting the vaccines my grades in school dropped dramatically and I felt like I wasn’t able to absorb all that I was learning. Seventeen months later I could barely function; I was always exhausted (sleeping 12+ hours a day) and was diagnosed with hypothyroidism and then hashimoto’s.
Sue says
I have Hashimotos hypothyroidism, which I was diagnosed with when I was about 64 years old. My 59 year old sister was diagnosed with Hashimotos, alternately hypo and hyper, plus Graves disease. We were vaccinated as children, so I wonder how far delayed the effects can be. My brother received a tetanus shot (he did request that the pertussis and diptheria components be left out) in 2009, and shortly thereafter developed weakness that spread, and was diagnosed with ALS. He has since passed away from it.
I do wish that vivisection would not be included in any “research” on the subject. Not only does it condone causing harm to innocent animals, but because their systems are sufficiently different from ours, the results of same are not considered “scientific.” :
“You just put in some formaldehyde or whatever and inactivate the virus, and you do a few tests, and if nothing happens in the animal, then you think, well, we’ve got a vaccine. But you put it into man, who is the ultimate susceptible animal, and then something else goes wrong, and you’ve got a problem.” – Dr. Edwin Lennette, director of the California State Department of Health

I was diagnosed with Grave’s Disease 25 years ago. I had Radioactive Iodine and since then have been on synthroid. I was
recently required to have the MMR vaccinefor work and following it, I became very ill with sore eyes and a chest infection. Is it the result of an autoimmune reaction.? Will I still be considered to have an autoimmune disease even though I had the radioactive iodine treatment? I am concerned I may have uveitis in my eyes (oculo-pulmonary syndrome). Do you believe I should have refused the vaccine.
Jaclyn says
I suggest you find a functional medicine doctor or naturopath asap. It sounds like you’re having a reaction to the shot. 🙁
Matilda says
I got the recommended childhood vaccines in the ’80s and had an uncontrollable stutter and psoriasis by the late ’80s. My siblings, 9 and 11 years younger, who never were vaccinated, did not have these problems. Same living conditions, same stress factors, same foods… I’m wondering if others have had psoriasis triggered from vaccines.
Brit says
Hi Matilda, I have also wondered if there’s a connection between psoriasis and vaccines. I received all of the standard childhood vaccines in the 80’s as well and developed psoriasis around age 7. I’m now 30 years old still suffering from chronic psoriasis. Unfortunately I’m not able to find any direct linkage from my attempts at researching this topic.

Great Article,
I recieved a TD booster following a small scratch 4 months back. Since then Ive had obvious nerve sensations all over my body, specifically my scalp and sides of my neck. Soreness and tingling. It makes me very upset to think this could get worse or be permanent! I dont know what to do, I cant get any answers.
Morgan Donnell says
My son was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes shortly after his third birthday, six days after receiving the flu mist and Polio vaccine. I don’t believe that it is a coincidence. I’ve been doing a ton of research into this, and what I’m finding is that people with MTHFR genetic mutations are far more susceptible to vaccine injury (due to heavy metals) and autoimmune issues. Synthetic folic acid that is added to foods and vitamins are practically poison for someone with an MTHFR mutation, and most people don’t even know that they have it. There is definitely a correlation.

I personally developed an auto immune kidney disorder (to this day it is only partially controlled by chemotherpy based immune suppresants)
Now, the docters wont give me an exemption for my daughter. So ethier i vaccinate or i dont get any child care assistance, meaning day care will cost 200 dollars a day.
Any links to peer reviewed studys that link vaccines auto immune disorders would be greatly appreciated. im going to war with the docters to get an exemption.
After the meds and prognosis i face im sure as hell not putting my daughter through it.
Meaning, This fight is worth 50k a year in child care costs.

My daughter Bailey at 15 months old receive the MMR vaccine within two months she developed autoimmune disease JIA we’ve been fighting for a year-and-a-half try to keep her healthy and in remission unfortunately two more joints have been affected. What is amazing is Children’s and John Hopkins still recommends all the vaccines which contradicts this article I’m very reluctant to give my daughter any vaccines again and since we live in the state which has no religious exemptions it makes it very hard for us to enroll her in any type of child care. My wife and I are very angry and disappointed that we’ve been put in this situation especially if it’s been caused by this vaccine.
Cathy Parker says
I received a swine flu vaccine when I was 18 in 1976. Within 5 minutes of the receiving the vaccine I became very ill. I worked at a hospital where they were pushing it. I couldn’t even walk back to the pharmacy where I worked. I knew it was the vaccine. People died from it and got Guillian Barre syndrom. I believe it affected my immune system. My German Shepherd pup got a 5 in 1 shot. Within hours she was rolling on the floor whining and biting herself. She got seizures, diarrhea and gut issues. We had to put her down before 2 years old because her seizures were so frequent. I will never vaccinate. We need to stand together and tell our horrible stories

My daughter developed eczema on her belly following the hepatitis b shot at birth. We stopped vaccinating her at age 8. She has PCOS, anxiety, maybe hypothyroidism, sleeps a lot, gallbladder removed, scoliosis. She is 18, and as soon as we can I’m getting her seen by a natural healing doctor to get her better.

When I went from Jr. college to a senior college, the health department made me get all of the required immunizations again because they said they lost my records. I was 19 years old and began to have pains in my left side (that I now know was pancreatitis). I was later diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at 23 years of age. I have two sons that both have autism. My youngest son was known to be allergic to egg before leaving the hospital for his birth. They did not give him is MMR until 18 months old. We were in a hospital sponsored “Mommy & Me” group and the group observed along with me that my son lost eye contact, all the language he developed, quit speaking, etc. We began having titer testing every year so the doctor could sign off on his immunity for the Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR). In 9th grade, my son developed an action activated tremor. He is now in the 11th grade and after putting him on an Elimination Diet (no gluten, sugar, no processed food, no corn or white potatoes, etc.) my son developed a severe rash that has been identified at Rubella. There have been no other Rubella cases reported in our area (information from the state health department). I can’t help but wonder if my son had the Rubella virus in his intestines and by changing the flora of the intestines we somehow activated the virus? How can my son get the Rubella virus when blood test show immunity and there are no other local cases?
Jaclyn says
It does, indeed, sound like his body is detoxing the virus. Personally, I think it’s a very good sign. Hope he’s feeling better and the elimination diet is continuing to help.

I worked in a hospital and around 2011 we were pretty much forced to get the flu shot. They also pushed for Tda[ every 5 years.
In March 2014 all of the sudden i could barely walk or pull a shirt off. I laid in bed with sever chills and fatigue for months – under comforters in the early summer. I read every book I could on autoimmune diseases. I diagnosed myself before the doctor did in Aug 2014: I was diagnosed with PMR (poly myalgia rheumatica) & Hashimotto’s thyroid.
I found an article questioning the PMR diagnosis after flu vaccines. No one in my family has autoimmune diseases. Where did this come form? I think it was the vaccine(s).
That’s my story!

Just a quick comment / question. When I copied the link for this article to share on my FB page, it had the words “The connection between vaccines and autoimmune disease: scare tactics …..” at the bottom of the picture. This seems odd that the words SCARE TACTICS would be put there by you coz there are very plausible data linking vaccines with autoimmune disease. Please respond back why this happened. I will put this post on my FB page to be open to the public.

It reads: “Scare tactics or scientific fact?” Just a way to preface the question that many would like to see answered. 🙂

My 16 yr old son has vitiligo from his left buttock down the leg half way down the thigh, then a couple of spots in the calf area. He barely has any underarm hair under his left arm, under the right arm seems normal amount. He has also has ezcema since he was a baby (maybe immunization induced) . Anyways same side of the body, on his left arm in the inside of the elbow he gets ezcema flare up….isn’t that weird, that everything that is happening to him is on the left side?
Jaclyn says
That is very interesting. He may benefit from working with an energy healer, such as someone who does the Body Code. The left side of the body could be connected to past traumas, both physical and emotional, while the right side tends to be related to current problems.

I have been researching trying to find a chart comparing the rise of vaccines and auto immune diseases. I wish there was a visual to show that. I have not found one yet, but I did find your website which is very informative. When I was a child, about 4 or 5 years old (about 1959) I was given the DPTT. I remember becoming extremely sick. My little butt cheek was very hot, very red and very swollen. I had a raging fever. It was days before the symptoms subsided. I was sickly ever since. In my mid 40’s I was diagnosed with CVID, a b cell deficiency. It’s a terrible immune deficiency that can cause a lot of auto immune diseases. I have developed hashimotos, and relapsing polychondritis. Lots of health issues and I feel so strongly that they are caused by the quadruple vaccine that I got as a child. It took me awhile, until I was in my early 50’s to recognize that the vaccine was the cause of all my health issues. I have stopped giving my animals vaccines as well. All of my pets that were vaccinated have gotten and died from some type of autoimmune disorder. The 2 pets that have not gotten vaccinated are very healthy with no signs of sickness. Thanks for your website and information. I don’t see the vaccine madness stopping due to the fact that it worth about 25 billion. A lot of corruption when that much money is involved. Very evil!

I developed eczema after having a 4th Hepatitis B shot. I was told I was still it immune after getting the 3 shot series and should get a 4th. 1 week after having the 4th shot at 28 years old I went to a doctor because my feet and hands itched so bad. He said it is your eczema flaring up, I responded I don’t have eczema. He said sure you do, it’s a childhood disease so you have always had it. I was angry at that point and told him I have never had this issue or ever been told in 28 years I have eczema. I thought he was crazy and went back to work and made an appointment with a dermatologist I trusted. Who also informed me it was eczema and it was odd that I had never had any issues with it ever. He prescribed some stuff that cleared it right up and about 3 weeks later I am informed I am now Immune to hepatitis B… I can’t believe they are not connected. Less then One week after getting the shot I have eczema? It is an auto immune disorder which can lay dormant until triggered. I tell my entire family not to get the hepatitis B series and if they do, never get a 4th shot. I am the first and only person in 5 generations of my family to have eczema, but we have had other auto immune disorders triggered in the family such as my grandfather developed Myasthenia gravis at 68 after being stung by a bee mowing the yard.

Yes; there can be a connection, even later in life.
